Als Konsequenz aus diesen Erfahrungen wurde in der deutschen Forstwirtschaft schon früh das Prinzip der Nachhaltigkeit eingeführt, demzufolge dem Wald nur soviel Holz entnommen werden darf, wie nachwachsen kann. Durch Aufforstung stieg der Anteil des Waldes an der Gesamtfläche wieder an. Nachhaltigkeit wurde jedoch lange nur als rein wirtschaftliche Nachhaltigkeit verstanden. Aufgeforstet wurde meist mit Baumarten, die schnellen revenue versprachen. Nadelholzarten verdrängten zunehmend Buchen- und Laubmischwälder. Standortuntypische Baumarten in Monokultur, unökologische Ernteverfahren und unangepasste Jagd prägten vielerorts einen Wald, der als Ökosystem sehr instabil battle und ständiger menschlicher Eingriffe bedurfte. Mit dem Erstarken der Umweltbewegung in den 1970er Jahren wurden diese Zustände zunehmend kritisiert. Natur- und Umweltschutzorganisationen wie BUND und NABU forderten eine radikale Umorientierung des Waldbaus nach den Prinzipien einer naturgemäßen, ökologischen Waldwirtschaft. Aus den schweren Folgen von Stürmen und Käferplagen in den 1990er Jahren erwuchs die Einsicht auch aus ökonomischen Gründen erstrebenswert sind. Die Ministerien und Landesforstverwaltungen der meisten Bundesländer reagierten und verankerten mehr Ökologie im Waldbau. In Rheinland-Pfalz battle der Erlass der waldbaulichen Richtlinie "Ziele und Grundsätze einer ökologischen Waldentwicklung" 1993 ein entscheidender Schritt zur Etablierung des Konzepts der "naturnahen" Waldbewirtschaftung.
